What a standing desk actually fixes

The sit-stand desk is the one piece of workstation equipment people buy expecting it to solve everything, and the one most likely to end up sitting at a single fixed height eight months later.

Worth being clear about what it does. A sit-stand desk doesn’t improve your setup. It gives you a second setup, which you now also have to get right. All the same variables — desk height relative to your elbows, monitor height relative to your eyes, reach — exist in the standing configuration too, and being upright doesn’t make any of them self-correcting.

What it genuinely buys you is the ability to change position without stopping work. That’s real, and it’s a narrower claim than the marketing.

The check

Standing has its own check, and it’s the same principle as the chair one: the desk sets your hands, and then you deal with everything else.

And the second half, which almost everyone gets wrong the first week:

That second check is the whole reason standing desks disappoint. Your eye height changes far more between sitting and standing than your elbow height does — you gain the full length of your thighs in eye height, and your elbows travel a shorter distance. So a monitor set correctly for sitting is too low when you stand, and the neck flexion you were avoiding comes right back while you’re congratulating yourself for standing.

If the monitor is on the desk surface, it rises with the desk, which sounds like it solves this and doesn’t, because it rises by the same amount your elbows do — not by the amount your eyes do. You need it higher relative to the desk when standing, not the same.

Practical answers, in order:

A monitor arm. This is the one genuine case for buying one. Changing the screen height becomes a two-second push instead of a rebuild, and without that, the standing configuration will be wrong roughly half the time.

A riser you add and remove. A box or a stack of books you put under the monitor when you raise the desk. Free, works, requires you to actually do it.

Split the difference. Set the monitor a bit high for sitting and a bit low for standing. This is the honest default for a fixed monitor and it’s a real compromise, not a fix.

What it actually solves

It removes the requirement to stop working in order to change position. That’s the mechanism. Sitting for a long time isn’t uniquely poisonous; holding any one position for a long time is the thing bodies dislike, and a standing desk lowers the friction of switching. If a switch costs you five seconds instead of a decision to take a break, you’ll do it more.

It makes it easy to stop perching. People who lean into their screens tend to perch off the backrest. Standing removes the backrest from the equation entirely for a while.

What it doesn’t solve

Standing still isn’t better than sitting still. Standing motionless for three hours produces its own set of complaints — feet, calves, low back — and if you swap eight hours of sitting for eight hours of standing you’ve traded one set for another. The value is in the changing, not in the standing.

It doesn’t fix a bad monitor or keyboard position. Those are independent variables. A perfectly adjusted standing desk with the screen too low is a bad setup you can raise.

It won’t do anything about how long you work. Not a furniture setting.

Setting the standing half properly

The keyboard and mouse. Same reach rules as sitting, and one thing changes: with no armrests and no chair back, there’s nothing supporting your arms at all. Reach errors cost more standing. Keep the keyboard close.

Your feet. A hard floor for hours is the most common reason people quit standing. An anti-fatigue mat is the purpose-built object; a folded towel, a rug, or a yoga mat does most of the same job. The mechanism isn’t cushioning so much as instability — a slightly soft surface makes you shift weight constantly instead of locking into one stance.

A rail or a low box to put one foot on. Old bar-footrail logic. Raising one foot slightly changes the pelvis angle and takes load off the low back, and swapping feet every few minutes gives you variation for free. A shoebox works. This is probably the single highest-value addition to a standing setup after the mat and nobody mentions it.

Shoes. Standing all day barefoot on a hard floor, or in unsupportive flats, is a different experience from standing in the shoes you’d wear to walk around. Worth noticing if standing gets uncomfortable faster than it should.

A chair you can still use. Perch stools and sit-stand stools exist to give you a third position between the two. Optional; the point is that more positions is the goal, not that standing is the destination.

How often to switch

There’s no established number, and the ones circulating — thirty minutes, an hour, fifteen and forty-five — are conventions, not findings. Anyone quoting one with confidence is quoting a convention.

The usable rule: switch when you notice you want to. Bodies signal position fatigue reasonably well and the signal arrives long before anything hurts. The reason people ignore it is that switching used to mean interrupting work; on a sit-stand desk it doesn’t.

If you want an external prompt, tie it to work events rather than a timer — stand for calls, sit for writing, switch at the top of each task. Event-based switching survives; timer-based switching gets dismissed and then disabled.

If you don’t have one

Most of the benefit is availability of a second position, and you can get some of that without the desk:

  • A high counter or kitchen island for a portion of the day, if the height happens to work for you. Check the standing check above before committing an afternoon to it.
  • A box on the desk, used as an ad-hoc riser for the laptop and keyboard. Ugly, free, works. Same monitor-height caveat applies, which is easier to solve with a laptop because the whole machine goes up together.
  • Standing for things that don’t need typing — reading, calls, thinking. Costs nothing, requires no equipment, and it’s a large share of the value.

What this doesn’t fix

A standing desk gives you options. It doesn’t use them for you, and it doesn’t change the fact that a well-set desk you never leave will still leave you stiff. Changing position regularly is the other half of this, and it’s not a furniture question.

Persistent pain, numbness, tingling or weakness — including new foot or leg symptoms after taking up standing — is a reason to see a clinician rather than to adjust the desk again.
